How red-ball cricket works

Two innings each

Each side can bat twice, and the side with more runs at the end wins. A side that wins “by an innings” scored more in one innings than its opponents managed in two, so it never needed to bat again.

Four days or five

Tests are scheduled for up to five days. Most domestic first-class matches are scheduled for four: in the last 12 months FairPlay recorded 375 four-day matches and 40 five-day matches.

Why draws happen

To win, a side usually has to bowl the other out twice. If the scheduled days end before that happens, the match is drawn. Captains can declare, ending their own innings early, to leave enough time to bowl the other side out.

The follow-on

If the side batting first leads by at least 200 runs in a match of five days or more, or 150 runs in a match of three or four days, its captain can make the other side bat again straight away. This is set out in Law 14 of the MCC Laws of Cricket. In FairPlay's data the follow-on was enforced in 66 matches out of 397 with a third innings.

Red, white and pink

Matches played in white clothing use a red ball. Limited-overs matches in coloured clothing use a white ball, and day-night Tests use a pink ball that is easier to see under floodlights.

FairPlay Red questions

What is FairPlay Red?

FairPlay Red is FairPlay's section for red-ball cricket: Tests and first-class matches such as the Ranji Trophy. It brings together the next fixtures, live scores, results, leading performers and the main red-ball figures from the last 12 months, all from verified Sportmonks match data.

Is FairPlay Red a separate website or app?

No. FairPlay Red is a page of FairPlay on fairsplays.in. It is not a separate website, app or account. To use FairPlay like an app, add fairsplays.in to your phone's home screen; there is nothing to download.

When do the next Ranji Trophy matches start?

The next Ranji Trophy matches stored by FairPlay start on 11 Oct 2026, with 19 matches on that day. Start times are listed in IST under "Next red-ball matches", and each match has its own match centre with the scorecard once play begins.

What is the difference between a Test and a first-class match?

Every Test is a first-class match, but a Test is played between two national teams with Test status. Domestic first-class matches, such as the Ranji Trophy, are played between state, county or provincial sides. Both use a red ball and give each side two innings.

Why do so many red-ball matches end in a draw?

To win, a side usually has to bowl the other out twice before the time runs out. When the scheduled days end first, the match is drawn. In FairPlay's data, 126 of the 415 red-ball results in the last 12 months were drawn (30%).

Where do the FairPlay Red figures come from?

Fixtures, scores and results come from Sportmonks match data, which FairPlay checks every minute. The figures cover finished red-ball matches from the last 12 months; they describe what happened and are not a tip or a prediction.

18+ only. Fixtures, scores and results come from Sportmonks match data and are checked every minute (this page was built at 11:40 IST). They are information, not a tip or a promise of any result. See how FairPlay's data works.
