How cricket finals are decided
One match for the title
Most tournaments end with a single final between the last two sides. The winner takes the title, whatever happened earlier in the competition.
Semi-finals and play-offs
Many tournaments reach the final through semi-finals. Some leagues use a play-off ladder instead: the top two teams meet in Qualifier 1 and the winner goes straight to the final, while the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2 against the winner of the Eliminator between the third- and fourth-placed teams.
Tied finals and the Super Over
A tied limited-overs final usually goes to a Super Over, one extra over for each side. After the 2019 men's World Cup final, the ICC decided that in the semi-finals and final of its global tournaments the Super Over is repeated until one side wins (ESPNcricinfo, October 2019). In the last 12 months, 2 finals in FairPlay's data went to a Super Over.
Rain in a final
When rain shortens a limited-overs final, targets are reset with the DLS method. Some tournaments also set aside a reserve day so that a final interrupted by weather can be finished.
Drawn first-class finals
A red-ball final can end in a draw. Some domestic competitions, such as the Ranji Trophy and the Duleep Trophy, then give the title to the side with the first-innings lead. FairPlay's data has 2 finals decided this way in the last 12 months. See FairPlay Red for Test and first-class cricket.
FairPlay Gold questions
What is FairPlay Gold?
FairPlay Gold is FairPlay's section for cricket finals: the matches that decide a title. It lists every final of the last 12 months with its champion and player of the match, the knockout matches still to come, the teams with the most finals won and the main finals figures, all from verified Sportmonks match data.
Is FairPlay Gold a separate website or app?
No. FairPlay Gold is a page of FairPlay on fairsplays.in. It is not a separate website, app or account. To use FairPlay like an app, add fairsplays.in to your phone's home screen; there is nothing to download.
Who won the most recent cricket final?
The most recent final in FairPlay's data was the Canada Super 60 League final on 5 Oct 2026, won by Toronto Sixers (Toronto Sixers won by 5 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)).
Which teams have won the most cricket finals?
Since 16 Oct 2024, the teams with the most finals won in FairPlay's data are India (4), India Women (4), South Australia (3). The full list is under "Most finals won", with the competition of each title.
Do teams win finals more often batting first or chasing?
In the last 12 months, the side batting first won 30 of the 69 finals decided outright (43%), and the side batting second won 39. The figures describe past finals; they are not a prediction for the next one.
What happens if a cricket final is tied?
Limited-overs finals are usually decided by a Super Over, an extra over for each side. Since October 2019 the ICC repeats the Super Over in the semi-finals and final of its global tournaments until there is a winner, instead of using the old boundary count. In the last 12 months, 2 finals in FairPlay's data were decided by a Super Over.
What happens if a first-class final is drawn?
Some domestic red-ball competitions, such as the Ranji Trophy and the Duleep Trophy, give the title to the side with the first-innings lead when the final is drawn. FairPlay's data has 2 finals decided this way in the last 12 months.
Where do the FairPlay Gold figures come from?
Fixtures, scores, results and players of the match come from Sportmonks match data, which FairPlay checks every minute. A final is a match the provider lists as the final of its competition; the figures cover the last 12 months and describe what happened, not a tip or a prediction.
18+ only. Fixtures, scores and results come from Sportmonks match data and are checked every minute (this page was built at 12:33 IST). They are information, not a tip or a promise of any result. See how FairPlay's data works.
